Abstract

This essay analyzes Europe’s cultural tourism as a mass-produced politics of location in a diverse but mythically unified European geography. In the process it illustrates how the popular myth of Europe as a Unity-in-Diversity is not only the intellectual property of cosmopolitan intellectuals like Edgar Morin, but how it has also served Europe’s common market, its global tourism market in particular. Demystifying the myth of Unity-in-Diversity that enables the idea of Europe to flourish under capitalist conditions requires that we analyze how particular identities are inscribed in current liberal conceptions of European citizenship, plural democracy and openness to the world. The economic figure of the tourist is exemplary in this respect since he combines freedom, cross-border mobility, openness to different cultures with the privileged position of the white bourgeois consumer always in search of unique experiences (diversity) in a world of common commodified values (unity).
