This book is a revision of my PhD thesis submitted to Australian Catholic University in 2018. I am indebited to a great number of people. First of all, I wish to express my deep gratitude to my supervisor Professor Pauline Allen for encouraging me and offering constant useful comments and assistance while the thesis was being written. I am deeply grateful to Professor Wendy Mayer for introducing a new wave of Chrysostom studies and for guiding me. Her feedback, suggestions, and warm encouragement were invaluable. I benefitted greatly from her vast knowledge. I wish also to record my thanks to Dr Raymond Laird and Professor Ormond Rush for their kind support and help. I thank Dr Geoffrey D. Dunn for proof-reading this manuscript. I am especially grateful to Australian Catholic University, which provided a generous scholarship. Without this financial support, I would not have finished my work successfully. I am grateful to Kosin University for its funding.
My most profound debt is to my family. As always, my family have been there, providing all sorts of tangible and intangible support. My parents and mother-in-law have provided care, physical, emotional, and spiritual. Most of all, my gratitude goes to my wife, Jinnie, who has assisted me in innumerable ways during my studies in the USA and Australia. Whatever I may say here cannot do full justice to the extent and the value of her contribution. Our children, Peter and Esther, have motivated me to pursue continually this endeavour. This book is dedicated to my lovely wife.
