There is an adage that states: âHe who opens a school door closes a prison.â The quotation suggests a connection between education and the prevention of crime â but says nothing about education for children who are already incarcerated. This essay will investigate the question of what is educational in education by interrogating notions of education, specifically considering the criminalized youth who once occupied the now-empty space of York Detention Centre in Toronto, Canada. I started my career as an educator teaching in this youth prison facility. When the prison was closed down to make room for the new âsuper jailâ facility that was built outside of the city limits, I felt it necessary to start asking more pointed questions of the space that was left behind, empty â yet not empty â in terms of what it could teach about educational experiences for criminalized children and youth. Using photographs of YDC, what was the central booking facility for the province of Ontario but was closed in 2009, I ask: Are incarcerated youth taught differently than their counterparts on the âoutsideâ? What âlearning goalsâ are laid out for such students? Biesta says one goal of education is â or should be â âsubjectification,â pointing to âeducation's orientation towards â¦ students as subjects of action and responsibilityâ (2012). If education's aim, then, is for students âto becomeâ subjects in their own right, what happens to this idea when objectification dictates notions of criminalized youth, those who have been labelled criminal and thereby have already âbecome?â With the use of a photographic remnant and âmemoriedâ story telling, I unpack this question by looking at it from two vantage points: notions of criminalized youth and education and a consideration of what is educational in education in respect to these marginalized children.
