A collaborative chapter from a UK based multi-disciplinary team from Birmingham Children’s Hospital including a chaplain, youth worker and volunteer from an academic institution. The chapter identifies spiritual needs faced by sick children and young people in hospital, responses to these needs and principles for spiritual care in this context. BCH has a chaplaincy team representing all the major world faiths and has a growing reputation for developing faith specific religious care as well as generic spiritual care that engages with transcendence and has relevance for all patients. The chapter offers an overview of issues involved in identifying and responding to spiritual needs of children and young people in hospital. We list some of the distinctives of spiritual care for sick children and young people. We differentiate between spiritual, religious and pastoral care and give examples of the sorts of issues faced. The propensity for patients to feel shame is discussed and the implications of this. We discuss assessment of needs and suggest a starting point of four core questions. Qualities of workers needed to engage in this work are elucidated. Drawing on our practice we suggest potential interventions and approaches that seek to address these needs which include such things as activities, conversation, creative arts, play, spiritual practices, storytelling and responding to children and young people’s wishes.
