This chapter explores the relationship between gender and intoxication within reported rape. Drawing upon a sample of 1,743 allegations of victim-intoxicated rape made to the London Metropolitan Police Service over two years between September 2006 and August 2008, it is established that patterns of reported rape are significantly divided along gender lines. The findings show that men and women who report intoxicated rape differ in terms of age, vulnerabilities and type of intoxication. Using gender and gendered discourses as lenses with which to view reported rape, the chapter explores the way in which rape myths, victim-blame and ambivalent attitudes towards sex and intoxication affect men and women differently, engendering differences in patterns of victimisation and reporting behaviour.
