The study of Ioannes Lodovicus Vives (Joan Lluís Vives in Catalan-Valencian, Juan Luis Vives in Spanish; 1492/3–1540) still relies primarily on the Opera Omnia prepared by Gregorius Maiansius (Valencia, 1782–1790, eight volumes). Although that edition possesses clear merits, it no longer meets the standards of modern scholarship.
The Selected Works of J. L. Vives (SWJV), established in 1987, seeks to remedy these deficiencies by offering critical editions of Vives’s writings. Each volume contains a critical apparatus that enables the study of the evolution of Vives’s thought through the revisions he made in his publications. The apparatus fontium facilitates the identification of Vives’s knowledge of classical sources, fundamental for an accurate reconstruction of his humanist background. The text is further supported by an index nominum and an index locorum. An English translation is included, accompanied by notes that do not replace the information assembled in the apparatus fontium.
With the appointment of a new Editorial Board in 2025, the series has been revised to reflect a more faithful approach to the Latin as written and printed in the sixteenth century. The series editorial policy and the author submission guidelines can be found here
