Since its creation (Treaty of London, 1949), the Council of Europe has defined human rights in more than 200 Conventions, including its flagship – the European Convention on Human Rights. The norms enshrined in these Conventions are the "gold standard" in many subject areas. However, this does not mean that these standards are unquestionably accepted and uncontroversial. In the last decade, mounting criticism from various political actors is directed against international organisations, including the Council of Europe and the conventions concluded under its auspices. They became the focus of sometimes controversial societal debates.

The Council of Europe Conventions book series provides a forum for the comprehensive analysis and debate of the law, implementation, political and sociological impact of the Council´s conventions in the 46 member states of the Council of Europe. This multidisciplinary, peer-reviewed series will publish monographs as well as edited volumes in the two official languages of the Council of Europe: English and French.
