China and Protestant Missions A collection of the earliest missionary works in Chinese
Books, periodicals, almanacs, Christian literature, catechisms, apologetics, hymn books, prayer books, biographies, and dictionaries relating to Protestant missionary work in China and covering such subjects as the history of the Christian Church as well as Western history, geography, science, and technology in general. Collection contains mostly 19th-century books in Chinese, authored and published by Protestant missions in China.
Provenance
The materials in this collection originated as tracts sent back to the Boston offices of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, during the century after the American Board's missionaries first arrived in China in 1830. In 1960 the Congregationalist successors of the American Board transferred the collection to Harvard University, where it is held in the Harvard-Yenching Library.
