Abstract

Returning to the theme of reanimalization, this final chapter examines the cultus as the site of spiritual habituation. Just as habit mediates the transition from the soul to spirit, the cultus facilitates the transformation of the natural being into a spiritual one. By paying attention to Hegel’s reading of Greek cultic practices, the chapter shows how religion functions analogously to habit, unifying nature and spirit. The cultus becomes a medium through which human beings recognize and reconcile themselves with their spiritual essence.
