Abstract

Social media through the influencers present on the platform play a pivotal role in shaping perceptions of the users and public. In a world with instant and quick bite information, the SMI’s (Social Media Influencers) are taken seriously by a majority of their audience. SMI’s garnishes quite an attention due to their statements. The statements are on varied subjects like health, political, including geo-political and elections, social, cultural, and other complex matters. Many times, this is information that is neither tested for its truthfulness nor researched by the SMI’s or their audience. Such creations or posts can have half-truth or dis/misinformation, that have direct influence on the society and impacts the human rights. The acts or omissions of these SMI’s though impact the society and disrupts social order, their actions mostly go unnoticed. The legal framework of many countries is not effective to combat this issue. The laws in the EU demonstrate how influencers can also combat disinformation, fostering democratic resilience while navigating media ethics and free expression laws.
