Abstract

For Hegel, the hero is an extremely interesting figure from several points of view. On the one hand, he is the embodiment of an unrestrained freedom, without ethical and juridical controls or limitations, who acts according to his best judgment and will in pursuit of the good. Thus, his actions become a guideline for others to follow, and his achievements generate the basis for political orders. On the other hand, the hero is a figure that, due to his anarchic character, must be transcended in one way or another, because the institutional life of modern societies demands stability, consensus, and intersubjective arrangements. Paradoxically, however, although Hegel acknowledges the above, he still assigns a prominent role to the figures that he calls world-historical individuals in the production of epochal changes and transformations. My purpose in this study is to give a reasoned account of why the figure of the hero in Hegel is subject to these tensions.
