This book primarily aims to investigate how knowledge of the singular is formed within a universal structure, thereby transforming individual facts into cultural meaning. To this end, the analysis focuses on Cassirerâs early philosophical period, when science was recognized as the fundamental model for knowledge development, and the epistemological concept of âfunctionâ was first justified. Although this focus may imply the subordination of the singular to scientific knowledge, the study will demonstrate that the seminal idea of the symbolic was already present in his early philosophical works (1898â1917). This prevents the reduction of knowledge to a single form and prefigured the explicit themes of his later, mature period. This approach also fulfills a secondary goal of tracing the evolution and structure of Cassirerâs thought. Each chapter illuminates the tension and potential relationships between sensible knowledge and the constitution of a meaningful framework that identifies the individual as an object of knowledge. The chapters also highlight the central concepts and debates that shaped Cassirerâs view of philosophy in the early 20th century.
