Abstract

This chapter draws upon distinctions between Asian and European perspectives to discuss Japanese interfaith engagement with the IF20 process as a case study of ‘loyal opposition’ interfaith engagement. The chapter assesses the potential and limitations of the IF20 from an Asian perspective of relational dialogue as distinct from a European rationalist framework. The authors, who have been actively involved with the movement since 2007, document the shared evolutionary roots of the IF20 and G8 interfaith engagement. Given Japan’s international history associated with the legacy of WWII, the position of Japan and Japanese interfaith engagement in the G-plus system is distinctive.
