Abstract

Memory, belonging and national identity are contested terrains in post-colonial Zimbabwe. With the resurgence of Ndebele separatist politics, the deep-seated fissures within the idea of Zimbabwe are being laid bare. A distinct Ndebele ‘nation’ is being moulded and imagined through the recollection and mobilization of histories, myths and memories. Online networks are transforming the practices of remembering the past and invoking nationalist politics. Scholarship on digital nationalism demonstrate that nations are imagined in everyday digital discourses. Social groups are relying on digital settings to express and recreate a sense of national belonging. Drawing upon Benedict Anderson’s concept of imagined communities, this chapter argues that ideas of a Ndebele ‘nation’ are invoked, asserted, and structured in digital spaces. It demonstrates the ways in which various social actors are recollecting, appropriating and politicizing the past to conceptualise a Ndebele digital ‘nation’. Data were collected through digital ethnography and semi-structured interviews. This chapter provides insights into the form and character of Ndebele nationalism being practiced and contested on social media platforms such as Twitter (also known as X), YouTube, Facebook and WhatsApp. With the proliferation of these digital sites of memory, the emerging Ndebele digital nationalism is augmenting the conventional, offline aspirations.
