Abstract

Through collaborative autoethnography, we explore academic socialization, agency, and well-being before, during, and after our candidacy exam.¹ Findings demonstrate that our doctoral life before candidacy exams were characterized by adjustment and transition to a new environment and role. Taking the candidacy exam gave us a renewed sense of identity as emergent scholars through building knowledge and leadership. Despite increased agency, dissertation research turned out to be more rigorous and intensive. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic required further readjustment in life, teaching, and research. However, we also learned to prioritize a healthier lifestyle and sustainably balance our life and work. In navigating the Ph.D. program as emergent scholars, we found professional communities such as this collaborative project to be a space that provides therapeutic experience and, thus, a source of support, encouragement, renewal, and empowerment.
