Abstract

In this autoethnographic study, I analyze the reconceptualization of my cultural identity as an international doctoral student from Turkey at a primarily White institution in the United States. I explore how the tensions I have felt in claiming my racial identity have made me hesitant to take space in conversations around race, even when these conversations pertained to my research interests. Intersectionality (Cho et al., 2013) and raciolinguistic ideologies (Flores & Rosa, 2015) form my framework and guide my autoethnography as I analyze how I navigated these tensions in my doctoral studies and at professional conferences I attended during my program.

Findings show that I was positioned to reconceptualize my cultural identities, encompassing/intersecting racial, ethnic, religious, and linguistic identities, in different spaces where I worked and socialized because identities I claimed did not always align with othersâ perceptions of them. This resulted from racialization, which occurs through the creation, occupation, and transformation of racial categories within specific political, social, and economic contexts based on oneâs cultural identities (Selod, 2015). Thus, through autoethnography, I confronted the influences of the larger social and political contexts in the United States on my identity racial, ethnic, and linguistic identity conceptualization as well as on my professional student and educator identities. This work can inform research in teacher education programs, and higher education in general, by providing a perspective on international doctoral studentsâ conceptualization of cultural identity in predominantly White spaces.
