Abstract

This chapter is a response to the preceding one (“Modalities, Image Schemas, and Mathematical Proof”, by L. Edwards) – presenting analyses of a collaboratively accomplished proof – which inserts itself in a particular discourse about knowing and learning mathematics that attributes an important role to the body. Having written chapters and articles from the perspective presented, I have nevertheless abandoned it more recently in a move necessitated by incompatibilities with my close reading of empirical data and existing alternative theoretical approaches. In this chapter, I articulate a number of theoretical and empirical issues that challenge the classical “embodiment” (enaction) perspective. Key aspects of the alternative approach include (a) its emphasis of movement and the transactions it implies – as opposed to the interactional take exemplified in the current embodiment discourse – and (b) the selection of event as a category (rather than thing) and most fundamental unit of analysis.
