Abstract

In the relatively new area of research into embodied, multisensory mathematics learning, questions of the qualities and scale of physical experience have largely been ignored. Most studies of multimodal pedagogy presuppose work on a very small and constrained scale, where teachers and learners move only fingers, arms, and eyes, while primarily looking at pieces of paper or screens. The empirical research that forms the basis of this paper begins from theories of multimodal embodiment from psychology and the performing arts as well as from mathematics education, and experiments further with the affordances of large scale and collaborative body movement, sonification and vocalization, touch that involves the whole body rather than only fingertips, and gestural resources that engage the spine, body core and vestibular functions. The research takes the form of pedagogical design experiments developing grounded theory through researcher-participant collaborative experiences and reflection. New theoretical developments based on this research consider the interactions of small/micro, medium/meso and large/macro physical scale multisensory, multimodal pedagogical designs and ways of knowing and learning to find interactions, complementarities, and differences among learning potentials at these scales.
