Abstract

Luis Radford (this volume) makes the case for a dialectical materialist perspective on embodiment—a perspective that focuses on the back-and-forth, reciprocal interaction between the human being and the material world. In this chapter, I build on Radford’s views, taking a cognitive-developmental perspective that integrates key ideas from sociocultural and information-processing traditions. I analyze a portion of the teacher-student interaction that Radford described in his chapter—an interaction that took place in the context of a mathematics lesson that was designed to help students “see” a growing pattern in a set of geometric figures, and to generalize that pattern to generate later terms in the sequence. My analysis aligns with Radford’s dialectical materialist view that embodiment does not reside solely in “the sensing subject” or solely in the “sensed objects.” Instead, embodiment is inherent in the activity that brings them together. The actions of the learner—as guided and scaffolded by the teacher, framed by the instructional tasks and materials, and situated in local and sociohistorical context—influence the mathematical meanings that emerge in the moment, and consequently, the learning that occurs.
