Abstract

Chapter 3, ‘Somatic Discomfort, Queering Education, and Hidden Curricula,’ addresses issues of heteronormativity and somatic discomfort within education. Drawing together the work of John Dewey on growth and play with recent work on queer pedagogy, heteronormativity is presented as a set of somatic problems within education that involve discomfort and alienation. Chapter 3 argues that these problems may be addressed by using somaesthetics of discomfort in tandem with Dewey’s philosophy and queer literacy. This chapter serves as an example of how somaesthetics of discomfort relates to problems rooted in identity, normativity, and alienation. Early education serves as a frame to examine how discomforting situations that are rooted in heteronormativity are problematic but may be used as affordances to discern and dismantle tools of social inscription through tools such as play, queer literacy frameworks, and somaesthetics.
