Abstract

Home is something with which most of us are deeply familiar. There are places, countries, and people with whom we are “at home.” Moreover, we can say the same thing about various situations, activities, or scholarly questions. This variety of sense of “home” points to the complexity of this phenomenon—to the fact that, while we may be familiar with home, we cannot readily say what it is. And the same is true of homelessness, which cannot be reduced to a simple negation or privation of home. In this paper I shall first discuss the ‘natural’ kinds of home that consist in community with our loved ones on the basis of Jan Patočka’s thought. Then I will turn to a type of homelessness that belongs to the experience of the thinker through an interpretation of Nietzsche’s aphorism Gay Science §377 (“We Homeless Ones”). I will conclude by discussing the relation of this type of philosophic homelessness to the experience of wonder, which is the beginning of philosophy according to both Plato and Aristotle, and consider in how far homelessness and wonder are related or opposed to each other.
