Abstract

Two of the greatest Central European interwar novels, Jaroslav HaÅ¡ekâs The Good Soldier Å vejk (Osudy dobrÃ©ho vojÃ¡ka Å vejka za svÄtovÃ© vÃ¡lky) and Liviu Rebreanuâs Forest of the Hanged (PÄdurea spÃ¢nzuraÈilor) were both published within five years of World War I. Both writers lived in former Habsburg territory outside of Austriaâs postwar borders: HaÅ¡ek in Prague and Rebreanu in Transylvania. Although HaÅ¡ekâs work has most often been compared to that of his compatriot Franz Kafka, a comparison with Rebreanuâs novel is equally fruitful. Forest of the Hanged focuses on the protagonist Apostol Bologaâs ultimately tragic search for national consciousness, but it also includes a Czech anti-hero, the captain Otto Klapka, whose cowardly self-preservation makes him the counterpart to HaÅ¡ekâs Josef Å vejk. In addition to considering the anti-war and anti-imperial themes in HaÅ¡ekâs and Rebreanuâs works, including their portrayal of ethnic tensions between Czechs, Germans, and Romanians, this chapter will examine Å vejkâs ambiguous relationship with the ideology of the first Czechoslovak Republic.
