Abstract

In Paulâs letter to the Philippians, there exists a dynamic interplay deriving from the phrase good work (á¼ÏÎ³Î¿Î½ á¼Î³Î±Î¸á½¸Î½; ergon agathon) in 1.6, which has to do with Paulâs partnership with the community in Philippi, on the one hand, and Godâs consummative work on the day of Christ, or the missio Dei, on the other. This chapter explores this dialectic as it relates to Paulâs appeal for the whole assembly of God to live a gospel-worthy life in Philippians 1.27. This exhortation coheres with David Boschâs paradigm of mission as the âministry of the whole people of Godâ, which has everything to do with communal participation in the gospel proclamation. Crucially, this chapter contends that gospel work necessarily features a Christocentric and others-centred praxis as the means to bear the image of Christ in the world. Reflecting on personal experiences within the Vietnamese diaspora in Australia, this chapter considers the outworkings of faithful gospel work amid complex nuances of language and culture across generations, and concludes that Paulâs missiology has space for diverse expressions of mission, such that communities challenged by difference may still see possibilities of working together to bear the image of Christ in the world.
