Abstract

Some of Michelangelo Antonioniâs film projects were never shot, for unknown reasons. Antonioni just wrote some short stories, vainly waiting for the opportunity to make films. The film director explicitly evokes his âpassion for Conradâ around 1969 in âFour Men at Sea,â a film project inspired by a piece of news involving three men drifting on a boat without anything to eat or drink while the fourth, the boat owner, has mysteriously disappeared. Antonioni declared that âthis Conradian impression of an open seaâ appealed to himâand it gave him the idea of a âhomage to Conrad.â In some other story, the name of one of the charactersâTowers (âJames Towersâ), is an obvious reminiscence of âTowser,â the name of the author of the mysterious volume on seamanship discovered by Marlow right in the middle of Congo. The boat involved in the film project, âThe Irene,â evokes other vessels in other narratives by Conrad. In yet another film project, a woman with a B.A. in chemistry, is an echo from the âProfessorâ in The Secret Agent, the inventor of explosives who himself owes his nickname to his former job in a chemistry lab. And one may also be reminded of Mr Ossipon, a deceptive sheet anchor for Winnie while the woman in âTwo Telegramsâ (the title of this film project) catches sight of âthe shadow of a man â¦ within the rectangle of a window in the neighbouring skyscraper.â The chapter investigates a number of details which may evoke key motifs in Conradâs fiction.
