Abstract

This chapter argues that the line dividing Michel Foucaultâs from Pierre Hadotâs assessments of the Hellenistic-Roman philosophies should be recast, as looking back to two interlinking distinctions in Foucaultâs work on the ancients, both of which Hadot contests. The first is Foucaultâs strong periodizing distinction between the classical-Platonic, and Hellenistic-Roman âgolden ageâ of philosophical âcare of the selfâ or âculture of the selfâ. The second is the contrast between Platonism and the care of the self in Stoicism and Epicureanism. Contra Hadotâs claims, Foucault at once grants, and then draws back from unequivocally granting, the presence of a cosmic dimension within Stoicism. This symptomatic tension in Foucaultâs text is the effect of Foucaultâs periodization of the ancient philosophies, and his desire to effectively quarantine the Hellenistic-Roman care of the self from what he calls âthe Platonic model,â which would bind self-care to knowing the divine within oneself and in the world.
