Abstract

This chapter shows why describing ancient philosophy as a way of life without qualifications is inaccurate. It proposes adopting a robust definition of âway of life,â Î²Î¯Î¿Ï, as a concrete, visible life-pattern which respects the literal use of the locution now and in ancient Greek. It also offers a typology that distinguishes two types of ways of life: conventional and special. These conceptual distinctions have many benefits: (1) they reveal that whereas some ancient schools involved a specific Î²Î¯Î¿Ï (Cynics, Pythagoreans, theoretic philosophers), others did not (Stoics, Epicureans, Skeptics); (2) they help see which ways of life were compatible or incompatible with the principles of specific schools, and why; (3) they help appreciate how the tension between the two main types of ways of life impacted philosophersâ position in society; and (4) they highlight the emergence of something new in Hellenistic and Roman philosophy: philosophy as an art of life.
