Abstract

In a matter of decades, some States could be wiped off the map due to rising sea levels due to climate change, losing their territory to natural causes. This situation questions its legal status in the future as a sovereign State. Faced with this, they could act and generate three possible scenarios: The total extinction, the permanence of the territory, and the transformation into a subject of public international law sui generis, in the style of the Sovereign Order of Malta. To this end, this work sets out the legal bases for each option and presents each possibility’s effects on the State and its citizens. This analysis aims to find answers to the case of the total loss of a State’s territory by a natural cause and possible courses of action.
