Abstract

In this autoethnographic study, I explored my life and professional experiences as a Chinese national and non-native English-speaking teacher (NNEST) in the U.S., and how these experiences led to my choice of dissertation topic on the teacher identity and teaching experiences of NNEST s in U.S. higher education. Employing imposter syndrome (Clance & Imes, 1978) as an interpretive framework, the study is guided by the following research question: How did my life and professional experiences as a non-native English-speaking teacher in the U.S. influence the choice of my dissertation topic? Findings suggest that the imposter syndrome I experienced as a relatively new transnational TESOL practitioner in the U.S. inspired me to explore whether this is a common experience among transnational TESOL practitioners from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds and how these teachers constructed their teaching identities. I end this chapter with suggestions on choosing a dissertation topic in applied linguistics for fellow doctoral students. As you start thinking about a potential topic for your dissertation research, it can be very helpful to draw on your life and professional experiences and see if you can connect them to your research interests. Additionally, do not be afraid of utilizing autoethnography as it can serve as a powerful tool in understanding cultural meanings through interpreting your personal experiences.
