Abstract

In this contribution I build on Bourdieu’s theory of field to analyze the social organization of modern postural yoga. I theorize on the concept of the yoga field intended as a “hybrid field” constituted by spiritual/religious, fitness/leisure and therapeutic/medical practical-discursive logics that determine what counts as yoga, who ought to practice it, and for what purpose. This contribution formulates a useful strategic device in navigating the internal articulation of the social organization of modern forms of yoga in contemporary societies, avoiding the dangers of postulating essentialist interpretations and providing loosely theoretical readings based on the relativistic explanatory variables of “context” and “culture”.
