Abstract

Annie Besant had been vice-president of the National Secular Society for sixteen years when she was excluded from it in 1891. The official reason was her conversion to Theosophy. Although this could be viewed as a major deviance from secularism, Besant had joined the Theosophical Society in 1889, and she had gone on lecturing for the NSS and editing the National Reformer, its weekly, for two years afterwards. So, this paper explores the reasons why Besant had remained active within the NSS, and the circumstances that eventually made her exclusion inevitable.
