Abstract

The paper discusses an ambivalent attitude towards Jewish mysticism in the Russian Orthodox thought of the early 20th century. The Orthodox theology was generally hostile to esoteric doctrines of other religions, especially of Judaism. However, in the early 20th century heated debates about the nature of language and divine names arose in the Orthodox camp. A group of Orthodox philosophers then offered its own interpretation of the doctrine of divine names, based, among other things, on Jewish Kabbalah. Being expressed by authoritative Orthodox thinkers, these ideas aroused a keen interest in Kabbalah in Russian society of that time.
