Abstract

In 1625 Fortunio Liceti wrote a book about ancient lamps that had been found still lit during excavations. This topos – eternally burning lights – can be used to show how “esoteric” stocks of knowledge can belong to the dark side of knowledge: they can apply to lost knowledge that one would like to regain; they can be precarious (if the knowledge is not written down), deviant (if it pertains to potentially heterodox disciplines such as alchemy), and they can be centered around "storied objects," objects that legends bind to.
