Abstract

This chapter deals with the relativity of the human-animal division in the satirical work of late nineteenth and early twentieth century Serbian writer Radoje DomanoviÄ. DomanoviÄâs short but intense oeuvre is an example of witty, earthy satire steeped in a posthumanist perspective avant la lettre, undermining anthropocentric and ethnocentric stances. A life-long opponent of Serbian nationalism, and a critic of the narcissism of the human species, DomanoviÄ lays bare the harmful absurdities of ethnocentrism and anthropocentrism, often to a comic and edifying effect.

The present chapter focuses on a selection of short stories and satires, demonstrating the employment of humoristic techniques through which DomanoviÄ combines the long tradition of European satire with innovative modernist features. The result is an original, engaging, and subversive literary output that is yet to be fully appreciated by international audiences.
