Abstract

The work of the Spanish avant-garde novelist RamÃ³n GÃ³mez de la Serna (1888â1963) offers an intriguing insight into the role played by the new elements of modern industrial life in early twentieth-century art. On the one hand, GÃ³mez de la Sernaâs critical writings, namely the essays gathered in Ismos [Isms] (1931), present the authorâs comprehensive view of the European artistic avant-garde, where he acknowledges the striking closeness between the functioning of modern machinery and the genuine procedures of artistic representation. On the other hand, in some of his short narratives, one may find machines and scientific research as a challenging realm of nonhuman alterity, where new voices and new perspectives, albeit caricatural, comic or puzzling, should be grasped. In this chapter, I contend that a new kind of non-anthropocentric point of view was clearly being tackled by GÃ³mez de la Serna in his avant-garde writing, having humor as the main discursive strategy. In line with the theoretical propositions developed by JosÃ© Ortega y Gasset around the concept of âdehumanization of artâ, GÃ³mez de la Serna hints at a change of focus from gloomy introspection and self-indulgence to an alternative of open communication and altruism beyond the traditional human borders.
