Abstract

This chapter aims to analyze Giuseppe Ungarettiâs poetics of ânomadismâ in his production of the Great War as a peculiar expression of that interconnected transversal subject which Rosi Braidotti has defined as ânomadicâ subject. This approach allows to overcome the ambivalence which is usually attributed to Ungarettiâs notion of identity as developed in his early work. Thus, it is usually assumed that the poems collected in The Buried Port display a mixture of migrant and multiethnic cosmopolitanism alongside a nationalistic and patriotic impetus which bears the mark of the performative construction of Italianness pursued by the Futurist avant-garde. Instead, Ferrara argues that these seemingly contradictory attitudes may be considered as part of the âbecoming-nomadâ process, and are therefore consistent with the development of a posthuman self. It is precisely in this fruitful âintra-actionâ between nomadic and performed identities â following Baradâs notion of performative or agential realism â that Ungarettiâs construction of a lyrical posthuman subject originates in Italian modernism.
