Abstract

Various forms of storytelling have been used by First Nations people for millennia to help explain the world. Oral history, songs, pictures, and movement are forms of storytelling used to represent science-related concepts. First Nations science and concepts of science are emerging areas of interest, for instance, in the ongoing fight against climate change within the Australian landscape. This chapter explores the importance and impact of both embedding First Nations perspectives of science and, carefully designing learning experiences that embrace First Nations representations, or forms of storytelling in the learning experience. We draw on vignettes and examples in the chapter, and whilst we don’t profess to have all the solutions, we seek to promote discussion about how we might improve the teaching of First Nations science contexts within the classroom. We do this because many educators do not feel confident or capable to include First Nations perspectives in their classrooms, despite a host of policy mandates calling for this to occur. Furthermore, when we consider the teaching of primary science, there is an absence of research exploring teacher uptake of First Nations perspectives in their pedagogy. We do know, however, that primary educators commonly avoid teaching science from the curriculum, which is mostly a Western perspective of science, due in part to a lack of self-efficacy and limited content knowledge. Whilst embedding First Nations perspectives and representations may add further complexity to the situation, the absence of First Nations voices in science highlights the importance of addressing the status quo.
