Abstract

In recent years, great importance has been given to studies related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in education because STEM tasks have an essential function in acquiring 21st-century skills of all students in general and especially gifted students and, as a result, in the progress of societies. Therefore, it is essential to examine especially gifted studentsâ thinking processes and even their decision-making processes to design functional tasks. Thus, learning environments that meet expectations and are suitable for recognizing and developing gifted studentsâ cognitive characteristics would be designed. This chapter examined gifted studentsâ mathematics educational and socio-cultural values underlying their characteristic qualities regarding learning mathematics. The study participants designed in a case study pattern were two gifted students in Grade 7. As a result of examining the decision-making processes while engaging with STEM tasks, value categories were obtained: Mathematics educational values are elaborative, relevance, proximal, using model, estimation, checking, calculation, and mental calculation, comparison, flexibility, curiosity, self-assessment, information, and communication technology (ICT) and socio-cultural values are aesthetics, justice, fun, socialization, naturalism, and healthy life. However, a cause-effect relationship was determined between these values. This relationship was shaped by the frequency of the reflecting values in the decision-making process according to the importance of gifted studentsâ values.
