Abstract

The dissolution of the English monasteries changed society across the country, but nowhere more so than in towns with monastic landlords. In Bury St Edmunds, St Albans, Reading, Abingdon, and other towns, the abbey was not merely a religious institution but the dominant force in the political, social, economic, and cultural life. With the dissolution, this authority disappeared instantly, posing the problem to the Crown and town residents of how to fill the power vacuum. This chapter looks at how local politics and society changed in Reading following the dissolution of its monastery and the execution of its abbot.
