Abstract

Dr French is the current General Secretary of ERRG, and has held that position since 2015. The chapters in this volume are gathered from speakers who have delivered papers at annual meetings of the group during this period, and also from a select group of long-standing members who have since established themselves as important voices in the field. In her introduction, Dr French demonstrates how each chapter approaches the field of Reformation studies in a unique and productive way – and yet how, when taken as a group, they also align along the key current vectors of the field, and offer a clear vision of where it is heading.

The introduction explains how each part of the volume works, proceeding from the educational and instructive literature that did so much to explain and negotiate the official theologies and doctrines of this uniquely fissile period to the community- and identity-building that characterised and powered its confessional politics; Dr French then discusses the increasingly influential area of material studies, and shows how its consideration here offers new routes to understand how all of this activity came to be embodied and expressed in objects and buildings, in ways that can transform and expand our understandings of these processes; finally, she considers the ‘long reformation’, a term that the final chapters here use to point towards new directions in Reformation studies that are forged by one of the key lessons of the last three decades: that the period was more complex and febrile than we ever previously thought. Having offered a guide to the volume, French closes with some conclusions about what the works it collects can tell us about the health and vitality of Reformation studies – and where its future emphases seem to lie.
