This chapter examines the somaesthetic principle of “self styling” through the case of Sachin Tendulkar. The sacred geography, mandala, is employed as an organizing tool to unravel the sporting legend. The image of the sporting hero takes shape through the on-field heroics that cement the relationship with the spectator. The knowledge about how Sachin cultivates his body and styles it for a spectacular performance also contributes significantly to the building of the icon.
The discussion follows a two-part approach in order to construct the image of the sportsman as a “citizen-hero”. The first part grounds the study of the hero in Shusterman’s philosophy of somaesthetics with emphasis on the idea of “self-styling” that characterizes exemplary individuals. The image of the hero is then differentiated to show that it possesses historical, cultural, mythological, liturgical and aesthetic dimensions. The second part employs integration of those dimensions as a mandala that has been applied to a secular context. The integration of elements is presented as a set of concentric circles, each with a set of analogous elements that together construct the credible image of the hero.
