The chapter analyses men’s elite-level football (soccer) in terms of Robertson’s concept of glocalization. The analysis begins by noting that what universalizes is principally forms, here the global sport of football; the particularization of the universal expresses itself as cultural difference, that is as a glocal expression of the universal form. It then notes that diverse universal forms have relative autonomy: they are not just expressions of some singular process like the spread of capitalism or Westernization. On this basis, one can see that football has become a global game with global rules and organizations that nonetheless expresses itself differently around the world through cultural content that are styles of play. These styles are understood as local, that is, national (e.g. Italian, Brazilian), through particular clubs, and as personal (particular star players and coaches). Yet these styles are not simply local products; they are glocal in that they develop relative to other styles globally and not in isolation. The analysis then considers the strong global convergence in styles over recent decades. This homogenization, however, also engenders new heterogenization in the form of innovations. The process is illustrated through the rise of the highly successful Icelandic-Nordic style between 2008 and 2018. The ‘newly invented’ but ‘traditional’ cultural glocalization is a condition for the further globalized thriving of the universal form.
