Abstract

This chapter returns to examine Richard Shustermanâs early studies of hip hop by contextualizing it within his wider philosophy of culture, politics, and aesthetics. RyynÃ¤nen focuses on Shustermanâs exploration of hip hopâs themes of resistance and liberation from oppression, and his account of rap as a unique artform which richly expresses postmodernismâs aesthetics of creativity through appropriation, synthesis, and technological recycling.
