Abstract

This chapter maps the common ground between the modernist little magazine and the scrapbook and suggests that both are closely related products of avant-garde practice. To do so, the chapter considers a scrapbook that is commonly attributed to American modernist writer H.D. (Hilda Doolittle), but likely the collaborative project of Doolittle, English writer Bryher, and Scottish artist Kenneth Macpherson, and reads it against the concerns and contents of Close Up, a periodical produced by the same group. Ultimately, the chapter argues that the little magazine and the scrapbook, while considerably different in terms of their materiality and accessibility, both provide an outlet for the performance of the artistsâ professional identity. By doing so, it draws attention to a public dimension of the scrapbook that challenges its assumed status as a mostly feminine and solely private affair.
