Forthcoming Series: History of Ancient Near Eastern Studies and Egyptology

Edited by Silvia Alaura, Istituto di Scienze del Patrimonio Culturale ‒ Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Rome, Thomas L. Gertzen, Freie Universität Berlin ‒ Goettingen University, and Hana Navratilova, Harris Manchester College, Oxford

The series provides a peer-reviewed platform for publications on the history of ancient Near Eastern studies and Egyptology, conceptualised broadly and intertwined with cultural and political identities of the modern world. The historical definition of the ancient world is conceived as overlapping with the early medieval period, including the Byzantine empire, as well as early Islamic states and Coptic Egypt. The history of scholarship is also understood as including its antecedents before the modern era.

Intended to be a disciplinary history series focused on research into the ancient cultures of the Nile Valley and the Middle East region, the series aims at presenting analytical works in history, scholar’s biographies (individuals and groups), the commented editions of primary sources, such as travelogues and correspondence, but also tightly knit proceedings volumes. Notwithstanding the focus on research into ancient cultures, it is open to topics related to natural history, geography or anthropology. The concept is therefore interdisciplinary and aspires to promote and publicize themes that bridge the history of humanities and sciences. The series will also consider topics related to reception studies, especially providing context for historical awareness and intellectual engagement with the studied region.
