Abstract

This chapter examines the birth of the history of philosophy as a scientific discipline. It explores how the historians of philosophyâs sense of self was constituted and transformed within the new landscape of modern knowledge. Creating or transforming a discipline is brought about by practitioners; it brings into play how they perceive themselves, how they think of their work, and how they situate their knowledge vis-Ã -vis other specialities, on a scientific stage and in a social, intellectual, and institutional environment.
