Abstract

Although the press emerged somewhat later in Spain than in the rest of Europe, it was certainly highly active in terms of receiving and spreading enlightened ideas. The first boom in the publication of gazettes, letters and miscellanies occurred during the 1760s, shortly after the closure of Graefâs journal. This decade is usually described as the âfirst golden ageâ of the press, or more commonly, the âage of spectatorsâ, because it was characterised by the long shadow cast by El Pensador (1762â1767), the outstanding newspaper edited by JosÃ© Clavijo along the lines of Joseph Addisonâs The Spectator. Around forty periodicals, most of which were published in Madrid, bear witness to the flowering of the press in this decade, so it is not surprising that analysing these publications is a significant part of cultural history studies of the Spanish Enlightenment, and this is clear from the literary ideas and criticism of society and customs that predominated in the press at that time. However, and most significantly, during the âage of spectatorsâ a press emerged that began to include articles on the âscience of commerceâ or political economy while retaining its multi-faceted nature, a fact that has frequently been forgotten. Between 1758 and 1771 eleven newspapers introduced economic topics into their pages, and this chapter analyses the main initiatives in this field, which was led by three journalists: Francisco Mariano Nifo, Pedro Saura and Mateo Antonio Barberi. Their periodicals were present at the start of the creation of a public sphere in the Spanish Enlightenment.
