(MSc in Development Geography) is a Ph.D. Candidate in World Politics in the Aleksanteri Institute at the University of Helsinki. Her dissertation “The Construction of China’s Leadership Role in International Climate Politics” is funded by The Tiina and Antti Herlin Foundation.
Liisa Kauppila
(M.Soc.Sci., MA in Futures Studies) is a Ph.D. Candidate at the Centre for East Asian Studies, University of Turku, Finland. Her current research focuses on China’s Arctic engagement, regionalisation, relational theory and China’s role in alternative Arctic futures.
Timo Koivurova
is a research professor and director of the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland. He was a lead editor in Arctic Law and Governance; the Role of China and Finland (Hart, 2017) and his research focuses on governance issues in the Arctic.
Sanna Kopra
is an Academy of Finland postdoctoral researcher in the Arctic Centre at University of Lapland and a visiting scholar in the Aleksanteri Institute at University of Helsinki, Finland. She is the author of China and Great Power Responsibility for Climate Change (Routledge, 2019). Kopra’s current research focuses on China’s Arctic engagement and great powers’ leadership in international climate politics.
Juha Käpylä
works as a Senior Research Fellow at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA). He earned his Ph.D. in International Relations from the University of Tampere, Finland, where he has also worked as a researcher prior to joining FIIA. Käpylä’s research interests include Arctic geopolitics and geo-economics, and International Relations metatheory.

Harri Mikkola
(Ph.D. in Political Science) works as a Senior Research Fellow at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA). Mikkola has published several expert analyses on the Arctic region’s transformation. His other fields of expertise include defence and security policy, hybrid war and influencing, societal resilience, security of supply as well as defence market issues.
Egill Thor Nielsson
is a Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Iceland and University of Lapland, and Senior Adviser at the Icelandic Centre for Research (Rannís). Previously, he was Executive Secretary of the China-Nordic Arctic Research Center (CNARC) and a Visiting Scholar at the Polar Research Institute of China (PRIC) and the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS). His research focus is on China-Nordic Arctic Relations in the context of policy, science and economy.
Matti Nojonen
(M.A. Sinology and Ph.D. in Economics and Business) is a Professor of Chinese Culture and Society at University of Lapland. He specializes both on traditional Chinese strategic culture and contemporary Chinese political economy and strategic behavior of China. Nojonen has translated into Finnish Chinese strategy classics (Gaudeamus Helsinki University Press) and is currently working on book manuscript “The Philosophy and Concepts of Traditional Chinese Strategic Thinking”.
Malgorzata (Gosia) Smieszek
is a political scientist and a researcher at the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland in Finland. She studies questions of Arctic governance, in particular the Arctic Council, and science-policy interface. Smieszek has been the Chair of International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) Action Group on Communicating Arctic Science to Policy-Makers (CASP) and a representative of IASC to the meetings of the Arctic Council. She is a co-founder of a non-profit association “Women of the Arctic” (www.genderisnotplanb.com).

Yulia Yamineva
is a Senior Researcher (docent) at the Centre for Climate, Energy and Environmental Law, University of Eastern Finland. Her research focuses on legal and governance issues pertaining to climate change, air pollution and science-policy interface. This work has been published in leading legal and interdisciplinary journals including Transnational Environmental Law, Environmental Science & Policy, and Nature Climate Change. Yamineva holds a Ph.D. in International Studies from the University of Cambridge.
