This book was developed based on my PhD thesis at the University of Edinburgh. It would not have been possible without the help of a number of great people.
First and foremost, I am extremely fortunate to have worked with my PhD supervisors, Professors James Harrison and Alan Boyle. Professor James Harrison set the best example for a supervisor with his kind guidance and unwavering support. Professor Alan Boyle helped me to tighten arguments with fundamental questions and to think of them in the bigger picture. I am also grateful to Professors Andrew Lang and Seline Trevisanut for serving on the viva committee and providing valuable comments and suggestions.
The work to turn my PhD thesis into a book was mainly done while I was working as a research fellow at the Centre for International Law, National University of Singapore. I would like to express my deep gratitude to the ilc member and Director Dr Nilufer Oral. I was very lucky to work under her exceptional leadership at cil. I would like to offer my special thanks to my supervisors at Korea University, Professors Ki-Gab Park and Pyoung-Keun Kang who have opened up the door to a new world of International Law and guided me towards the right path.
