Acknowledgments
It has taken time to complete this book after the conference at which most of the chapters were presented as short papers, because we wanted completely reworked chapters rather than telegraphic conference drafts. In the first place, we thank the European Science Foundation, which awarded us the ESF Exploratory Workshop. This was the main financial support for the conference, “The Rites Controversies in the Early Modern World,” held in Paris at the Centre d’Etudes de l’Inde et de l’Asie du Sud (CNRS/ EHESS) in 2010. We also benefited from a grant from the Écoles des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales.
Along the way, many researchers and technical staff helped at various moments. We thank the commentators at the conference: Antonella Romano, Alan Strathern, Antje Flüchter, Annick Delfosse, Christian Grosse and Joan Pau Rubiés. We also thank those who were not able to contribute chapters for their participation and stimulating discussions: Catherine Jami, Isabelle Landry-Deron, Florence Hsia, Juan Carlos Estenssoro-Fuchs, Ananya Chakravarti and Paolo Aranha.
We thank Nadia Guerguadj for making maps; Seema Doutrelant for translating texts by Pierre Antoine Fabre and Sabina Pavone; Margaret Whibley and Nikola Rajić for copy-editing and “Englishing” most of the texts.
