Note on Transliteration, Conventions and Abbreviations
The Arabic transcriptions aim to render the manuscript originals studied in this book as accurately as possible. Vocalizations in these manuscripts are later additions and, moreover, they often do not follow the conventions of Classical Arabic. This makes their rendering with the technology at my disposal impossible and will be therefore omitted. Likewise, the glottal stop or hamza, the alif waṣla and alif madda, are often omitted in the manuscripts and will not be represented. The Arabic transliterations in the main text follow the system of The Encyclopaedia of Islam, New Edition. Solar letters are assimilated into the Arabic article with the exception of the names of persons. Apart of the transliterations from the manuscripts, I have not used the plural of Arabic words but added an s to the singular instead (fatwā reads fatwās, and not fatāwā). In general lines, the system used for the transcription of Aljamiado words and of the Aljamiado manuscript in MS BNE 4944 and MS BCA L 526 in the Annex corresponds to that used in the Colección de Literatura Aljamiado-Morisca (CLEAM), although some adjustments have been made for the purposes of the present work. Dates are indicated in Common Era with the exception of manuscripts dated in Common Era and in hijrī Era, in which case both dates are provided.
